Taking care of ourselves for own sake is similar to what they tell us in pre-flight briefing – mothers need to put on the breathing air masks in case of emergencies first before putting it on their babies. We can’t help others adequately if we don’t take care of ourselves first.
Let’s look through the next set of things that we could do as part of Self-Care.
1. Grunt. Sweat. Repeat.
Keeping yourself fit and healthy not only helps prevent diseases like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity etc but also causes the brain to release neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin that help increase pleasure and happiness. It is also beneficial in helping those suffering from mood and anxiety disorders.
2. Getting your Glow on
Having a skin care routine can be a fun way to both ensure terrific looking skin and a relaxed mind. You could pair this along with other fun activities like artwork, listening to music or reading a book.
3. PAWSitivity rocks
Playing with a pet is a lovely way to let off some steam, get a daily dose of exercise and keep your animal buddies happy. Taking care of pets has been shown to get people feeling more content and adding to general well-being. So, go ahead, make their day and yours!
4. Talk the talk
When life gets too overwhelming or we feel like we need help in dealing with things, it’s important to reach out. You can talk to people you are close to, if that helps reduce your stress. You could also talk to trained mental health professionals.
5. The practice of Gratitude
The more we’re thankful, the less we grumble and the more content and hopeful we feel. As an exercise, reflecting on THREE things you’re grateful for at the end of each day would shift focus from things that constantly get you down.
These are only a few of the many things we can do to care for ourselves. Step one is recognizing the importance of taking time off to give yourself the mental boost you need!
