It’s hard keeping ourselves motivated when it can feel like we’re repeating the same day over and over, like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. The pandemic has put a stop to a lot of the things that we loved doing like catching a movie in theatre, travelling to our favourite vacation spots or being part of different groups. While we may not be able to do much about it, we can focus on the things in our control to brighten up our day and these could include some of the following:
· Add one new thing to your routine – Make sure it’s something exciting and fun! When we add something different, it keeps the monotony at bay and we are a lot more enthusiastic about what tomorrow looks like. This could be doing a dance workout routine, solving a puzzle, having a Netflix party, colouring in mandalas, anything!
· Reflect on building blocks – Similar to how soil comprises many layers, so do our priorities. Figure out what your bedrock consists of – it could be work, spending time with loved ones, health, music, etc – and get each day to have one activity that strengthens it. For example, if your bedrock consists of art, you could try sketching for a while or doodling on your device for a set time, uninterrupted. When we prioritize our building blocks, we are also prioritizing our values and working toward our goals.
· Do something challenging – When we play it safe, we get into the habit of limiting ourselves. Perhaps life looks boring because there aren’t many risks we are taking to get out of our comfort zone. Sign up for activities that put you out there a little bit more like joining a creative writing class, taking the lead on a project or volunteering to host an online event.
· Mix fun and relaxation into it – While it’s important to have goal directed behaviour, it’s also important to stop and smell the roses. The trick is to find the balance between work and play – both equally vital. Perhaps this means watching or reading your favourite trilogy, painting your room or dressing up for the heck of it.
· Focus on self-care – One of the most crucial things to do is to keep your physical and mental health in check. It has been said countlessly but that is how true it really is! When we have stable and balanced health, we have the energy and resources to take on what life throws at us. Otherwise we find ourselves being exhausted and burnt out more often and quicker than we would like.
